Senior Counsel – Oil Products, Commercial, Legal

What is your current role at Shell?

I am Senior Counsel for Oil Products in the US, and give legal advice on many different types of matters on the transactions side – including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, joint venture financings, securities, corporate law and strategic aspects of legal work such as planning and structure. I am also co-head of knowledge management for the legal department.

I never know what my day will look like. It’s fun because I get to work with a wide variety of clients and legal colleagues, including people in London and The Hague. I usually work with colleagues overseas quite a bit – at least weekly if a deal is really hot.

What do you like best about your role?

I would have to say that I’m a deal junkie – I love the fact that each deal requires figuring out how to take a whole basket of personalities and viewpoints and find an arrangement that works for everyone. Every deal proves that I haven’t experienced everything…yet.

Tell us about your background and experience

I received a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, went to Germany on a Fulbright fellowship and then obtained a law degree from Harvard. I worked for a couple of law firms on the West coast and here in Houston, and then moved in-house with a chemical and pharmaceutical group, where the work was primarily transactional (much like my current role). My background is very international, which has made me comfortable with the global aspects of my responsibilities.

What makes you stay at Shell?

A combination of things – the people that I get to work with and challenging assignments make my job fun. Shell has a great collection of people who have full lives outside of work, which I believe contributes to the richness of life at work.

It’s important to me to work for a truly global company. The diversity at Shell makes my life interesting every day, and management is great about encouraging you to get relevant experience and go after new opportunities. That makes life exciting here.
