Global Category Manager for Energy

KateLocation: Pernis
Studied: Chemistry, MBM
Where: Bristol and Manchester, UK
Joined Shell: September 1986

What is your background and experience?

Before my current role, I was a Global Business Manager responsible for marketing detergent intermediaries. Before that, I was in Singapore - initially as a team member for a capital investment project worth US$650m and then as the Asia Business Manager for a chemicals business. I've also worked on corporate strategy and oil trading in London.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

My team is responsible for purchasing electricity and gas for all of Shell's Downstream locations - from refineries to retail sites. I'm also part of the overall leadership team for manufacturing procurement.

Have you received any training at Shell?

Shell paid for me to take my MBM, which has aided my career development to no end, and I have also been on a number of Leadership Development courses.

What do you like most about the job?

The diversity of my team - they're brilliant! Also I've only been in this role for seven months, yet already it's been a tremendous opportunity to learn about the complex electricity and natural gas markets.

What are your future career plans?

I've never really planned my future - I prefer to concentrate on developing my 'weak spots'. I'd like to have the chance to manage a larger group of people, and I'd also love to work in a Joint Venture so I can gain experience of running a company.

What makes you stay at Shell?

The network of people I've developed over the years has made Shell a real community for me. However the biggest factor in making me stay is that I've always been challenged by the work I do.
