What is your current role at Shell?

As an Environmental Project Manager with Shell, it is my responsibility to manage the local implementation of environmental projects at operating and closed Shell sites (most commonly retail service stations and distributor depots). I also ensure compliance with relevant standards, environmental laws and contractual obligations in accordance with Shell’s overall business goals, policies and processes. Where an impact to soil or groundwater is identified due to fuel spillage or leakage, my role is to manage it to ensure that no risk is posed to people or the environment and to develop an effective remediation strategy.

This presents all kinds of challenges as I work to manage priorities, risks, budgets, expectations and people. My role has allowed me to develop skills in commercial and contract management as well as build on my organisational and communication skills.

What do you like best about your role?

When I first started at Shell, what struck me most was the immense caliber of people that work here. I was immediately impressed by their professionalism. Everyone I met was so obviously articulate, intelligent and, as a result, quite inspiring.

Today, almost five years later, the thing I appreciate most about my position is the people I work with. I am fortunate to work in a youthful, dynamic team. In addition, my current role enables me to work closely with people in other parts of the Shell business and also requires me to foster good working relationships with regulatory authorities, local government, neighbours, consultants and contractors.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Shell offers some great opportunities for career development. As well as  attending a number of training courses and seminars during my time at Shell, I have also been fortunate enough to be involved in some short-term assignments overseas and interstate, as well as be involved in a 3-month placement with the local environment protection authority.
