Why did you join Shell?

I graduated from the Economic Faculty of the Institute of Asian and African studies at Moscow State University In 2001. Finance and economic education, combined with my linguistic skills (Russian, Arabic) gave me a competitive advantage in Oil and Gas industry, so I decided to pursue a career in one of the major oil companies. Prior to joining, I’d already lived in Holland - so Shell was the most obvious and desired choice.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

I am a member of the Central Cost and Planning Group for the Sakhalin II Project – the largest direct investment of Shell worldwide. Our group collects cost and schedule information from different areas of the project. We verify the input data, analyse it, try to estimate risks and foresee threats – and we also look for savings opportunities and mitigation scenarios.

Our overall goal is to keep management informed of the current situation on the project and to assist them in its execution within budget and schedule. My personal role is to collect and to analyse incoming information. I also have coordination responsibility for the Dashboard –a Management Information System developed by Shell EP to highlight major EP projects issues. I was also involved in defending the economic part of TEOC for Sakhalin II with the Russian authorities.

How would you describe your typical day?

My typical day consists of liaising with people to provide information. Due to the time difference between our offices in Holland and Sakhalin, this by itself is a challenge. When input is received, I compare data from different sources and make sure it is complete, meaningful and trustworthy. Meetings and presentations are common as well.

What do you like most about the job?

There are two things really. First of all I really enjoy the atmosphere of motivated individuals driven to achieve the result. ‘There’s a real ‘can do’ attitude here. Another thing that appeals to me personally is the feeling of being needed. In communicating with specialists from all over the world, my knowledge has become crucially important.

Have you travelled to other countries/regions within your role?

Yes – life in Shell is very dynamic. With our project in transition phase, I travel frequently between Rijswijk in The Netherlands, Moscow and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk in Russia. In the future I would also like to explore the Middle East with Shell.
