Global Exploration Geologist

What is your current role at Shell?

I work as part of the newly established Global Exploration team responsible for delivering consistent production growth. Basically, we must identify and nurture new exploration opportunities globally. I work the ‘white space’, looking at places on the globe that nobody else is considering from the perspective of developing new businesses or exploring new basins. I also evaluate both internal and external proposals to fund ventures.

 

What do you like best about your role?

It is exciting. I get to explore the world on a daily basis. I read a lot – not just about the geology of different places, but also the economic, social and political climates of different places in the world. I am constantly learning.
 
In exploration, you are setting the future direction of the company. You are replacing declining businesses with new and exciting ventures.

 

Tell us about your background and experience

I obtained a PhD in Marine Geophysics at Birmingham University, and joined Shell straight afterwards. I have since worked in research and development, quantitative interpretation, 3-D seismic interpretation, and, more generally, oil and gas exploration. In the process, I learned a lot, and gained much professional satisfaction through successes on the way.

 

What makes you stay at Shell?

In 15 years I have essentially worked in four very different companies and eight different jobs all within the same group. I have never done the same thing for more than two years – I’ve never felt stuck in a rut. Shell offers challenges and job satisfaction, and I can still map out a career path for myself.
