GeokLocation: China YueYang City, Hunan Province
Studied: BSc and PhD Chemistry
Where: Nottingham University, UK
Joined Shell: 1980

Why did you decide to work for Shell?

Before completing my PhD Studies, I had recruitment interviews with several companies. I found Shell to be the most professional and that it could offer me a challenging international career, commencing in the Netherlands.

Where did you come from (your background/experience)

I was born in Malaysia but studied in the UK. I am a physical chemist by training and have worked at Shell as a Chemical Engineer in a variety of positions.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

Currently I am the Project Manager of the YueYang Coal Gas Joint Venture. I manage the USD $138 million construction site where the Shell Coal Gasification Process (SCGP) plant is being built. Concurrently, as General Manager of the Joint Venture, my team and I are responsible for setting up the organisation. This includes recruiting the staff, training them in preparation for running the plant production, and establishing the business and company policies within the Joint Venture management framework.

What do you like most about your job?

I get a great sense of achievement when I see a plant being built and growing daily. I also draw a lot of satisfaction from the difference we can make to the community. On a personal basis, I took pride in representing Shell to receive the Baling Friendship Award for contributing to YueYang's economic and social development.

What would you like to do in the future?

Having invested three years of my time in China, I'm able to speak the language and also know some of the key NOC stakeholders. I'd like to capitalise on this following my current assignment in YueYang, and remain in China for another role.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Shell is an excellent company to work for - I get a real buzz from the diverse and enriching variety of assignments available.
