What is your current role at Shell?

I am an SQL server database administrator for Shell Oil Products in the US. I maintain and install populated or new SQL server databases. A populated database might be a migration project from Oracle or Access, while an empty one would allow application teams to populate the database.

When we have major, long-term projects such as moving our hosting services to a location where we can self-maintain, I play a role on the planning team. Here I will identify whether additional SQL servers are needed and determine whether or not existing hardware is sufficient.

What do you like best about your role?

One of the perks is that there’s always something new to learn in this industry. It’s a challenge to be on the leading edge of a technology-laden industry – you try to be continually ahead of the curve. I’m given a lot of opportunities to grow in my role.

Tell us about your background and experience

I originally worked as a network administrator. I started with Rockwell a year or two out of college, after working with an investment firm. Afterwards, I worked with Pennzoil, Imperial Sugar, Lyondell Petrochemical and then joined Shell. I have been in the business about six years.

What makes you stay at Shell?

A combination of things. The challenges, the opportunities to learn new things, the great people and the flexible schedule are key factors. My manager and team lead are very supportive of my role, and I haven’t found another company that offers such work flexibility.
