Supply Business Systems Controller

What is your current role at Shell?

Varied! My skill set has changed considerably since I first joined Shell in the trading department. Using my trading knowledge, I worked as a business consultant on SAP implementation for the UK, Ireland and Northern Ireland. My experience in the potential pitfalls associated with a major implementation enabled me to then join the SAP project in Australia.

The SAP project began winding down in December after two years. Prior to my anticipated return to UK, I was temporarily assigned to the supply department in the Geelong Refinery, which has since transformed into a 3-year role. This area was hugely impacted by the SAP roll out and my role was to review and streamline the business processes wherever possible.

My current tasks include being responsible for the Atlantis scheduling system, interfaces into SAP, and being the focal point for all SAP supply queries. Essentially, I assist those who have SAP usage problems. Ultimately, within this role, I want to improve the knowledge of SAP amongst my colleagues, so it’s regarded as a useful tool.

What do you like best about your role?

I like several aspects: individual responsibility, the unpredictable nature of the role and the fact that my manager trusts his employees’ judgement, but offers support when needed.

Shell has some great people working for it. Good colleagues can make any job into a really enjoyable job.

Being responsible for organising my own daily workload allows me to spend time doing the tasks I regard as most important.

As for variety – rarely do the same issues occur, so no two days are alike. I get phone calls from people at locations around Australia, asking for assistance, which makes life more interesting.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Initially, I only planned to be with Shell for a couple of years to gain experience in a large organisation – but 13 years later, I am still here and still enjoying it.

Part of the reason for still being here is that I have been fortunate enough to be given opportunities to move around and expand my business knowledge. The first eight years were spent in a variety of roles in the trading department of Shell UK, which was an exciting and vibrant area to experience. Since then I have slipped into a ‘technical’ role.

Working with SAP has been a great experience, not least because it has taken me to different countries. I have found that different countries (Australia, UK and Ireland) have very different approaches when faced with similar issues/problems – despite the common language. It’s been an interesting few years!
