What is your current role at Shell?

I work in front-end engineering design of wells including field development plans, concept selection and the well delivery process for both new and mature fields. My main function is to lower the unit technical cost of wells in Saba through more careful planning at the early stages of development.

I work daily with the sub-surface team, which is made up of Reservoir Engineers, Geologists, Petrophysicists and Seismologists. I also act as the link between sub-surface teams and the well construction team, and provide well support for the exploration team as part of the field development plan. I am also learning more about the sub-surface disciplines and the commercial aspects of well engineering through my involvement in business planning.

What do you like best about your role?

I like the fact that I am involved early on in the well design process when it is important to think broadly and consider a wide variety of possibilities without restrictions. I enjoy the environment where there are no boundaries because it means that I can influence the business as well as learn new technologies.

Tell us about your background and experience

I studied Petroleum Engineering in Bogota, Colombia and joined BP straight from the university in 1992. In 2000, I joined Shell in Dubai for two years before moving into my current role.

What makes you stay at Shell?

Shell provides me with the opportunity to grow technically by sponsoring training and technology trials. There are also many different job opportunities, which will help me move into management roles in the future. I especially enjoy the 'flextime' as this enables me to look after my nine-month old baby as well as take music lessons. I am also able to work from home. Shell respects work-life balance.

Shell has a very clear framework on the well-delivery process, which provides direction and allows you to see where the opportunities are in the future. Also, the well delivery process is global, which means there are greater opportunities worldwide on different projects in different regions.
