Tomorrow's Energy Here Today

As new technologies are introduced around the globe, the challenge is to meet the world’s rising energy demands with economical, environmentally friendly fuels. Burning fossil fuels like oil and gas release greenhouse gases, which trap heat close to the Earth, causing global warming. Also, fossil fuels are a limited resource. They’re non-renewable: they aren’t replaced after they’re removed from the ground and used up. In the future, there will be a need to rely more on renewable energy and less on fossil fuels. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydrogen are non-polluting and they won’t run out.

Shell is preparing for the future by developing new ways to harness energy and fuel using these renewable sources. Someday, in the not-too-distant future, you may drive a car fueled by hydrogen and live in a home powered by energy from the sun or wind. Even your entertainment could be renewable. Already, a Ferris wheel in Southern California is using solar power to spin!

solar energyLet the Sun Shine - Just 20 days’ worth of sunlight contains as much energy as all of the fossil fuels on Earth. Solar energy from the sun is a clean, reliable source of power. You’ve probably used a solar-powered calculator. Read about solar energy.

wind farm in the USFarming Wind - Temperature differences around the globe cause air to move. That’s wind. It may not always feel very windy on the ground, but 40 stories up, wind can be pretty powerful. That’s the height of many wind turbines. Wind turbines are high-tech modern windmills. Learn more about wind energy.

hydrogen station

Hydrogen: The Ultimate Fuel - Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It’s found in water, fossil fuels, and all living things. Unlike electricity, hydrogen can be stored for future use. That makes it great for powering vehicles and other portable devices. Learn more about Hydrogen.

Athabasca Oil Sands

Sifting the Surface - Shell is constantly developing new technology and looking for new and better ways to remove oil from the ground. To do that, we are making sustainable development a part of our mission. Sustainable development projects are designed to benefit the community and to protect the environment. Learn about Shell's involvement with oil sands.

Mahagony Research Project

Shale and Shell - For at least 600 years, people have been removing kerogen (a form of petroleum) from a type of rock called shale. The Ute Indians told tales of warriors who saw rocks burn after being struck by lightning. Pioneers in the western U.S. fueled their campfires with shale and used kerogen to grease their wagon wheels. Learn how shale is used today.

power from biomass

Massive Power from Biomass - Corn husks, banana peels, even dried-up animal waste – these could be the fuels of the future. Sound crazy? It’s no joke. Waste from plants and animals is known as biomass. Just like fossil fuels, biomass contains carbon. And it can be used for energy. Pretty neat. Click to learn more.
