Does providing scholarships today ensure a qualified workforce tomorrow? This college student thinks so. As a college sophomore, Jared Murphy doesn’t know exactly where he’ll be in five years, but unlike many of his peers, he has a well-defined plan. Now he’s pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, thanks in part to a Shell Technical Scholarship. Can skipping classes prepare this high school senior for the real world? It can if she’s skipping classes to work in a chemical lab. Brenda Blanco isn’t having the typical senior experience, but she doesn’t seem to mind. Brenda leaves school early to go to her job in the lab at Shell Deer Park Chemical Plant. One of her daily responsibilities includes testing the level of chemicals in wastewater generated during the manufacturing process to ensure that chemical levels meet environmental standards. Shell is proud to give high school students like Brenda this type of hands-on job experience through programs like Milby’s Petrochemical Laboratory Technology program. Could a teenage girl someday devise a plan to save coastlines from hurricanes? She and her friends already have. It could have been located anywhere in the entire universe, but Lauren Arikol and her two friends chose to build their futuristic city off the coast of their home state of Louisiana. Their city, L'Etoile Directice set in 2152, was devised with the distinct ecological purpose of protecting their state’s wetlands from erosion by hurricanes and the continual Gulf currents created by the Mississippi River. While her city might still be more than 100 years in the future, Shell believes that the engineering experience Lauren gained through Future City can be put to use much sooner. Find out how Shell helps cultivate minds like Lauren’s through educational programs like Future City by visiting shell.com/us/lauren.

How do you grow a successful business? That’s easy – one satisfied customer at a time. Growth is easier too when one of your best and most satisfied customers is Shell. Terri Hornsby, owner and president of TLC Adcentives, a promotional products company, is happy to tell you that being certified as a woman- and minority-owned business provided her the opportunity to work with Shell, but she is more proud to have kept Shell as a customer for nearly eight years because of the quality service she has consistently delivered. What’s required to start a business? “A little know-how, a lot of self confidence, and the support of a few great companies,” says this business owner. At 27 years old, Donna Fujimoto Cole wasn’t entirely prepared to start her own petrochemical distribution company. What 27 year old would be? But Donna, whose grandparents were Japanese immigrants, had a few things going for her. She had four years of intensive experience in the industry, she had tremendous confidence in herself, and she had the strong support of several companies like Shell that wanted to see her business and other minority and women-owned businesses succeed. That was more than 26 years ago. Today, Donna continues to operate Cole Chemical & Distributing and her company remains a preferred distributor of chemical products to Shell. To learn how Shell has helped Cole Chemical and other Minority & Women Owned Business Enterprises (M/WBEs) over the years, visit shell.com/us/cole.
