How do you deal with the world’s growing need for energy and the resulting impact of climate change? According to the Malaysian Energy and Climate Dialogue organised by Shell Malaysia the key to tackling this issue is through open and honest dialogue, collaboration and changes in behaviour. This event brought together various experts and over 200 delegates from corporations, environmental NGO’s, academics and government agencies to discuss and understand the world’s growing need for energy and the resulting impact of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on climate change, from a Malaysian perspective. The dialogue was officiated by Dato’ Seri Azmi Khalid, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, who called on corporations to implement simple measures that can make a difference in meeting the energy challenge by ensuring energy efficiency in their operations. He said this would allow savings in terms of operating costs as well as to minimise negative effects on the environment. Shell Malaysia, Country Chairman, Dato’ Saw Choo Boon meanwhile stressed the importance of creating the climate to change and respond to this challenge through dialogue, collaboration and action in his welcome address to participants. “We will not succeed without collaboration between the government, private sector, NGO’s, and academia. Effective, comprehensive solutions will require everyone to work hand-in-hand. We are not here to point fingers and assign blame, we are here to join together and create change,” he said. Dato’ Saw went on to affirm Shell’s commitment to sustainable development, by balancing short and long term interests, and integrating economic, environmental and social considerations into its business decision-making in helping meet the world’s energy needs. The dialogue covered key topics on the world’s growing demand for energy, government policy and incentive, the resulting impact of climate change as well as innovative energy solutions. Greg Hill, Executive Vice President of Shell Exploration and Production Asia Pacific kicked off the dialogue with his address on the implication of the energy challenge from a global and Malaysian perspective. The Malaysian Energy and Climate Change Dialogue was organized by Shell Malaysia in collaboration with the Business Council of Sustainable Development Malaysia and the Institute of Corporate Responsibility Malaysia. The event was supported by the Malaysian Climate Change Croup, the Royal Netherlands Embassy and Philips.
