Introduction

Shell Companies in Indonesia (SCI) is the term used for convenience to apply to the compilation of individual Shell companies in Indonesia, with each individual company forming part of the Royal Dutch Shell plc or Shell group, a worldwide leading oil and gas company. The Royal Dutch plc is a unification of two parents companies, Royal Dutch and Shell Transport and Trading with its corporate headquarter in the Netherlands.

Although The Royal Dutch Shell plc was established in The Hague in 1890, the history of Shell in Indonesia can be traced back to 1884 when a Dutch man, Aeilko Jans Zijlker, discovered traces of oil in Sumatra. With a license obtained from the local ruler, Sultan Langkat, he drilled his first well, but it was dry. A year later, he drilled Telaga Tunggal 1 in Pangkalan Brandan in North Sumatra. This time he struck oil and Telaga Tunggal 1 began to produce in commercial quantities.

By 1890, Ziljker converted his "Provisional Sumatra Petroleum Company" into something more substantial, and on 16 June the company charter of the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company was established in The Hague. Since that time the Royal Dutch Shell plc/Shell Group of Companies have been present in Indonesia in various business activities.
