A Study by Shell Reveals Fuel Economy Followers Doubled in Two Years --- Drivers cut back on car usage and adopt fuel-saving measures in tough economic times

14/05/2009

Shell Hong Kong today reveals the results of its cross-region study on fuel economy*, which looks at whether drivers are trying to save fuel more today than they did two years ago.

According to the 2007 survey results, Hong Kong was the second least fuel economy active in the region, which raised concerns about the importance of fuel saving. This year, the study shows the number of Hong Kong drivers who claim to be fuel efficiency active has substantially increased by 136% (from 25% in 2007 to 59% in 2009), which is the most significant improvement amongst all six surveyed countries in 2009. Hong Kong drivers have caught up with Malaysia and are still more “fuel-economy active” than Singapore.  The results reflect that:

  • Approximately 60% of Hong Kong drivers check their fuel consumption every week, compared with just 35% in 2007.
  • On average, fuel efficient drivers take over 6 actions to get more mileage from their fuel, compared with less than 2 in 2007.
  • Saving money is still the biggest motivator when it comes to being more fuel efficient.
  • Over 80% of Hong Kong drivers are willing to make changes to their driving habits to achieve higher fuel efficiency.

The survey also shows that 85% of Hong Kong drivers have cut back on car usage, mainly for trivial or personal driving trips, such as shopping and socialising.  Daily car usage has also fallen from 45% in 2007 to 13% in 2009. Approximately 70% of drivers think the economic situation and fluctuating fuel prices are the major factors for reducing car usage.

The research also indicates that 86% of drivers are willing to change their driving habits in order to achieve fuel economy.  However, ignorance and lack of information are hindering the Hong Kong drivers who are not doing anything to be more fuel efficient.

Daniel Ng, Director of Shell Hong Kong Limited said, “Although the number of fuel economy followers in Hong Kong has doubled, our survey shows that there are still a lot of local drivers who wish to obtain more information on FuelSave. Therefore, we have launched our latest FuelSave Training website, which is designed to train 100,000 drivers the easiest ways to improve fuel economy with simple tips. We hope our FuelSave tips will become one of the effective strategies to help local drivers tackle the current tough economic climate.”

During the result announcement, Michael Wong, joined by Daniel Ng on stage, spoke as Shell’s FuelSave Ambassador to the Hong Kong audience for the first time, “I’m thrilled to be part of Shell’s FuelSave programme to help every driver save fuel. Last weekend, I went to Germany to participate in the 25th Shell Eco-marathon.  In those two days, I’ve seen first-hand that it’s easy to save fuel if you have the right knowledge, like applying Shell FuelSave tips correctly and using fuels with Fuel Economy formula. I hope that my involvement in Shell’s FuelSave programme will inspire more drivers in Hong Kong to adopt these simple measures, saving fuel for themselves – it’s definitely worth it!”

Shell Fuel Economy
Shell is the world’s largest fuels retailer with about 45,000 retail stations in over 90 countries. Shell has over 100 years of experience developing the technology and services that make it a leading provider of innovative new fuels today. In the 1920s Shell introduced Shell Dynamin, a fuel that offered some of the most advanced engine efficiency of its time. In the 1950s Shell fuel included a proven mileage ingredient.

In 2003, Shell first launched Shell Unleaded with Fuel Economy formula and in 2006, Shell set a Guinness World Record for fuel economy by helping a couple from Australia, John and Helen Taylor, to circumnavigate the globe using only 24 tanks of Shell Unleaded with Fuel Economy formula. In 2007, Shell added to its fuel economy product offerings, with the launch of New and Improved Shell Diesel with Fuel Economy formula. Shell released its first global study on fuel economy in 2007, which investigated the driving habits of 3,300 drivers in 11 countries, showing their awareness of fuel economy. Following the research, Shell extended its fuel initiatives and conducted the Shell FuelSave Challenge in Hong Kong – a study that explores how much fuel can be saved with changes to driving habits and selection of fuel. Within a month, 78% of the 179 drivers who participated in the Hong Kong FuelSave Challenge experienced benefits, while 32% achieved over 10% savings in fuel. This demonstrates Shell’s vision of helping motorists in the world save 10% or more fuel is achievable.
