Capacity Building

Shell has supported this pioneering non-profit making environmental organisation since 1996 and has been proud to be a small part of this successful organisation which has helped raise awareness of environmental concerns in China at grassroots level, building a membership today of more than 1,000 dedicated people. Friends of Nature support many of Shell's environmental initiatives taking the lead in organizing some of them.

"Global Village" is a non-governmental environment organisation founded by Liao Xiaoyi, whose pioneering work has been recognized internationally in 1999 when she won the Sophie Prize in Sweden for her environmental work. Shell supported several Global Village projects including a television programme about the environmental initiatives of the Australian Olympics, a children's guide to the environment, Green Community Guide Book and an environmental poster campaign.

Shell helped set up the first China office of the international children's environmental and social NGO Roots and Shoots, started by world famous zoologist Jane Goodall. Roots and Shoots is encouraging children all over China to undertake practical programmes to benefit the environment, animals and humans, and so far has 1,000 members in over 60 action teams across China. Shell has supported their activities since 2000.
