Environment Improvement Plan (EIP)

Environmental improvement is a priority for Shell Geelong Refinery. In recent years the refinery has focused an enormous amount of effort on improving environmental performance.

An EIP is a voluntary, public commitment by a company to improve its environmental performance.

It is a commitment between a company, the community and the environmental regulator and aspires to continuous improvement on emerging environmental concerns.

The purpose of an EIP is to improve environmental performance.

The purpose of the EIP 2007-2009 is to build on the refinery's recent major achievements - many of which were completed as a result of actions identified under the EIP 2004-2006 - and to identify any new opportunities for environmental improvement.

Shell Geelong Refinery's EIP 2007-2009 lists key projects and activities that focus on seven areas:

• Resource Efficiency
  • Water
  • Energy & Greenhouse Gas Emissions
  • Waste Management
• Air Quality ;
• Soil and Groundwater;
• Community Amenity; and
• Proactive Environmental Management.

The EIP expresses Shell Geelong Refinery's long-term aspirational goals and reflects our determination to achieve continuous environmental improvement.

In line with our commitment to sustainable environmental improvements, Shell Geelong Refinery has made considerable progress against the 2007-2009 Environment Improvement Plan (EIP).

To monitor our performance against EIP goals, the refinery engaged an independent auditor who provided feedback to both Shell and the CAP.  A summary of our overall progress (as of December 2008) has been compiled.

During 2004 - 2007 the refinery made great progress on its 2004 Environment Improvement Plan (EIP). This report provides an outline of the key achievements and environmental improvements made against the 155 items included in the plan. We are now building on these achievements with our new EIP 2007-2009 and have identified ways the refinery can further improve on environmental performance.
