Gore Bay Terminal Training Exercise - 30 October 2008

Shell Clyde Refinery and Gore Bay Terminal are committed to safe and responsible operation within their communities. Part of delivering upon this commitment is ensuring emergency response procedures and capacities are up-to-date and regularly tested.

We’ll be undertaking a test of the Gore Bay Terminal emergency response on Thursday, 30 October 2008.

What is happening?

Gore Bay Terminal

At Shell, we pride ourselves on running our business in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Through Shell’s documented global business principles, we take great care in meeting this objective through daily activities and regular testing of procedures.

This is particularly important when it comes to safety and security. For this reason, we frequently check our ability to respond to emergencies through ‘desktop’ and practical exercises involving agencies such as the Police, Fire Brigade and so on.

We’ll be undertaking one of these exercises on Thursday, 30 October 2008 at the Gore Bay Terminal in Manns Avenue, Greenwich.

As this is a major emergency test exercise, it is likely residents and visitors in Greenwich will see and hear emergency vehicles and personnel in the area around the Terminal. There may also be water-borne emergency craft involved.

The exercise is not expected to impede traffic flow around the Terminal, however, residents and motorists should be mindful of the presence of emergency services vehicles and personnel.

As a result of this presence, there will be the potential for emergency services personnel to give directions to passing traffic. Due caution should therefore be exercised.

Evaluation

To ensure Exercise ‘Pectin Shield’ provides the best possible data to both Shell and the local community, two resident members of the Shell Gore Bay Community Group, will monitor activities and help Shell evaluate outcomes from the community perspective.

They will then report back to residents through the Community Group and other opportunities.

The exercise also involves the Local and District Emergency Management Committees of the Lane Cove and Willoughby Local Government Areas, giving added assurance in testing the overall emergency response for the benefit of the local community.
