The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina presented Shell with both the difficult challenge of resuming operations in the area and with an opportunity to demonstrate our community leadership. Shell was one of the first major New Orleans Central Business District (CBD) employers and the first CBD-based oil company to commit to return and restore its offices and business operations.
Shell executed a yearlong campaign to clearly demonstrate its commitment to the safety and well being of its employees, the city of New Orleans and her people.

Recognizing that return to physical and employment security are only pieces of employees’ well-being, Shell developed programs to augment the recovery process. On the personal side of the equation, the company provided more than $45 million in hurricane related employee assistance programs. It also developed programs that empower its employees to make a difference publicly.

There was no shortage of worthy causes following the hurricanes, so to ensure that its resources, manpower and expertise would achieve the highest levels of mutual benefit, the company rigorously researched all options before recommending those that tied most directly to the company’s overarching principles of respect for people, planet and profit.

| Cultivating, attracting and retaining qualified local workforce was an increasing challenge long before the hurricanes struck. The effort to reach recruitment goals kicked into overdrive after the storms, since keeping solid jobs within the state is of paramount importance to Shell and the region’s overall recovery.
