Lights and electrical

Figures 1 to 4 - regularly check car lights and electrics

Be seen

Check all lights, including interior lights, for correct operation. You may need someone to help you check the exterior lights (fig 1) but replacing any worn-out bulbs (fig 2) will reward you with a rejuvenated car. If two or more lights are not working, it may mean a fuse (fig 3) rather than the bulbs needs changing. Refer to your car’s user manual on how to change the bulb or fuse. Consider keeping a set of spare bulbs and fuses in the car and familiarise yourself with how to change them.

New lens covers

Look for cracked light covers (fig 4) and replace. Refer to your car's user manual to see how to replace the cover, but if you are comfortable using a screwdriver it is a straightforward job and will quickly refresh the look of your car. You should be aware that for some cars, the headlights are fitted as a complete unit and you will need to reconnect the electrical wires when fitting.
