Exploration and Production

printable version

Most of our exploration and production activities are concentrated in the land, swamp, offshore (shallow and deep) provinces of the Niger Delta.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria  (SPDC),  has been mainly responsible for exploration and production of oil and gas in land and swamp and shallow offshore. Oil production from these provinces alone average 1 million barrels per day.

The  Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Compan  (SNEPCO),  was established primarily to bring the Shell expertise to deepwater exploration. The Bonga deepwater discovery made in 1995 increased Nigeria’s crude reserves by some 600 million barrels. Another major discovery with similar reserves potential to Bonga was made to the south west of Bonga in 2001.

The development of these fields and others on land, swamp and shallow offshore allows Shell to bring its expertise in exploration and production into play and transfer the relevant skills and competencies to Nigeria.
