Many of you are aware of an email in circulation for a couple of years now, purportedly issued by Shell, on the dangers of static electricity at petrol stations. Having read the warning (see attached file/link), you may have personal concerns or be approached by external parties, including friends and relatives for clarification and confirmation on whether Shell has issued this warning.
We confirm that Shell does not have any record of having issued such a warning on static electricity.
However, static electricity is a potential danger when refuelling, although chances are remote in more humid climates like Malaysia. We take this opportunity to highlight the importance of respecting and practising safe refuelling :
- turn off the engine and deploy the hand brake.
- mobile phones should not be used while refuelling (either speaking or sending a text message).
- ensure that the nozzle is properly inserted into the vehicle's fuel tank before refuelling.
- motor bikers must dismount when refuelling.
- replace the nozzle properly in the holster after use.
