Emission Reduction Units
Emission Reduction Units (ERUs) are project-based tradable credits generated from activities to reduce greenhouse emissions in industrialised countries.
One Emission Reduction Unit (ERU) equates to an emission reduction of one tonne of CO2 equivalent.
ERUs are generated by a Joint Implementation project and allow countries to claim credit for investment in other developed countries. The ERUs go to the investor country while the emission allowances of the host country are reduced by the same amount. Typical projects include fuel switching, methane capture and re-use, energy efficiency improvements and renewable projects.
