Since December 2013, Shell has introduced two new cylinder oils: Shell Alexia S5 (BN80) and Shell Alexia S6 (BN100). These products feature Shell’s advanced triple-action technology to help protect the latest engine designs from increased acid stress and corrosive wear.

Changing Industry Needs and Oil Stress

The shipping industry is going through a challenging period. This is encouraging ship owners to seek new, more efficient engines designs or to modify existing engines to save on fuel costs.

Such changes can increase Oil Stress and the consequent performance demands on lubrication oils and systems. Of the four components of Oil Stress -acid, insolubles, humidity and thermal, we have recently seen these changes drive acid stress to the forefront.

More Acid in New Engine Designs

Newer engines have higher engine pressures and lower cylinder wall temperatures, which, together, can lead to more sulphuric acid condensation and a higher risk of corrosion.

Our calculations show there could be up to 300% more acid in the cylinder under certain conditions. This increases the risk of higher maintenance costs.

Shell Alexia S5 and Shell Alexia S6 - An Efficient Way to Tackle Corrosion

Conventional cylinder oils just focus on neutralising acids. However, Shell’s triple-action technology works in not one but three ways to boost the oil’s ability to protect your engine. It works like this:

  • Acid blocking: This reduces the acid penetrating the oil film.
  • Acid neutralisation: Acid that gets past the oil surface is neutralised by over-based detergents to form calcium sulphate.
  • Smart Detergency in the formulation: Acts to stabilise the calcium sulphate and gives more protection against deposit build-up.

Shell’s advanced triple-action technology has been developed through a deep understanding of oil stress in 2-stroke engines .

For operators of the latest engines, our technology helps to deliver reduced wear and improved cleanliness, which, in turn, mean lower maintenance costs and longer engine life.
