- We have a portfolio of world-class brands across a wide range of lubricants applications
- We invest in technical innovation
- We develop genuine partnerships with OEMs
- We strive to put the customer at the heart of what we do
We have a strong supply chain
Shell is active across the full value chain. We produce base oils in eight plants, across a range of grades, and blend finished lubricants in more than 50 plants in about 34 countries. We market, sell and distribute those finished lubricants and offer services to customers in over 100 countries. For customers, it means security of supply and assurance of superior quality products.
Our supply chain strategy is focused on installing and securing capacity to match market needs and growth aspirations. Our world-class supply chain employs more than 3,000 people and is a source of competitive advantage.
We have a portfolio of world-class brands across a wide range of lubricants applications
Shell has market-leading lubricants brands across a number of applications or categories, including heavy duty motor oils, passenger car motor oils, process oils, other automotive oils, hydraulic fluids, general industrial oils, industrial engine oils and greases. Each brand has a number of different formulations. Shell’s portfolio of lubricant brands includes Shell Rimula, Shell Helix, Shell Rotella, Shell Advance, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Formula Shell, Shell Gadus, Shell Tellus and Shell Spirax.
We invest in technical innovation
Shell brings world-class technological insight to its lubricants business. We have specialised lubricants research centres in the US, Germany, UK and Japan (35% Shell owned), employing more than 200 scientists and lubricants engineers who carry out millions of miles of field trials every year. From the lab to the field, we apply our knowledge to help improve our customers’ performance, productivity and profitability.
We have a patent portfolio with 150 + patent series for lubricants, base oils and greases.
We develop genuine partnerships with OEMs
We believe that collaboration, or ‘co-engineering’, between equipment manufacturers, engineers and lubricant manufacturers yield the most impressive results in terms of fuel economy. We are convinced that this is especially true in the CO2 and emissions constrained world, where the fuel economy credit that can be realised is strongly linked to the intensity and depth of the relationship.
We have strong experience of developing customised lubricants for OEMs and collaborating with these companies over time. Examples include Ferrari, Hyundai, Honda, Daimler, Ducati, Komatsu (manufacturer of construction and mining equipment), Warstila (diesel and natural gas engines and propulsion systems manufacturer), ZF (transmission manufacturer), Schaeffler (bearings, engine and drivetrain components manufacturer) and Chinese OEMs.
We have over 3,000 equipment manufacturer recommendations or approvals across our product range.
We strive to put the customer at the heart of what we do
We have more experts, talking to more customers, than any other lubricants supplier. Over 350 technical field staff and 30 Product Application Specialists are working in-situ with thousands of customers every day. We listen to and work hand in hand with customers to develop a deep understanding of their businesses, the challenges they face and the environments they operate in.
In 2012, Frost & Sullivan awarded Shell its first European ‘Customer Value Enhancement Award’ for automotive lubricants this year. Their analysts noted Shell’s leadership in the quality and technical specifications of products and the track-to-road benefits of Shell’s technical partnership with Ferrari. They also recognised the high number of Shell technical specialists in the lab and in the field, and tools such as Shell LubeMatch and Shell LubeAnalyst.
