Powerful Technical Partnerships
A continuing commitment to excellence in motorsport.
What makes a great partnership? The key elements are a shared vision, a willingness to work together and a determination to excel. In sport, the partnerships that last are those based on trust and an understanding of the qualities and strengths that each partner brings to the team.
Shell has established a formidable track record as a fuels and lubricants partner for leading teams in world motorsports. This is borne out by recent developments with Scuderia Ferrari in Formula One™; Ducati in MotoGP and World Superbike; Hyundai in the World Rally Championship; Team Penske in NASCAR and IndyCar; and, finally, the FIA World Endurance Championship (24 Heures du Mans).
The first full Formula One race of the 2014 season in Melbourne, Australia, saw the new 1.6-L turbo-powered cars in action for the first time. Scuderia Ferrari’s F14 T took to the track with an entirely new suite of bespoke fuels and lubricants supplied by Shell. The organisation has developed these to complement the reintroduction of the V6 Formula One engine: it provided more than 50 blends of its SHELL V-POWER* race fuel for bench testing before the all-important on-track tests.
The new F14 T features an extremely sophisticated powertrain that called for close technical co-operation during its development, as Guy Lovett, Shell Technology Manager for Ferrari, explains, “Shell’s contribution to the performance of the new powertrain was crucial, and we worked closely with Ferrari throughout the development of the 2014 engine to ensure that our fuels and lubricants met the demands of this latest evolution in Formula One.”

Elsewhere, Shell has extended its technical partnership with Ducati to support the Italian manufacturer’s return to the World Superbike stage in 2014. This marked the resumption of a relationship that has seen Shell fuels and lubricants help Ducati to win six World Superbike Riders’ Championship crowns and nine World Superbike Manufacturers’ titles since 1999.
“With Ducati running its own team in World Superbikes again, it was logical to have all our fuel and lubricant requirements under one roof, as Shell is already our technical partner in MotoGP,” says Paolo Ciabatti, Sporting Director, Ducati Corse. “We are delighted to have extended our agreement to cover this area of activity and thus enable synergies across both series. Shell is an old friend. We know that we can count on their passion for racing and their technical expertise.”
Shell also announced its return to top-flight sports prototype and GT competitions with the signing of an agreement with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest as the official fuel partner to the FIA World Endurance Championship and the European Le Mans Series. Under this agreement, the organisation has been supplying Shell V-Power unleaded and diesel products to all the teams registered in these race series since the beginning of the 2014 season.
“This was an announcement that went back to the heart of Shell’s history in motorsport,” comments Richard Karlstetter, Racing Fuels Technology Manager, Shell. “Shell is delighted to be the official fuel partner to the FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series.”
