The characteristics of a successful mega-project

A few years ago, Shell established a group of professional project managers capable of delivering complex megaprojects and driving changes in the way it executes its projects. This has resulted in significant improvements in delivery, and the organisation is aiming to achieve top-quartile project delivery performance, as categorised by Solomon benchmarking analysis, across its whole project portfolio.
Projects such as the Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex in Singapore, the organisation’s largest integrated refinery and petrochemicals project; Perdido in the Gulf of Mexico, the world’s deepest offshore oil drilling and floating production facility; and the Parque das Conchas ultra-deep water project offshore Brazil are recent testaments to Shell’s top-quartile, megaproject delivery capabilities.
