Raising the bar
Malaysian refinery enhances its operational performance.
Established in 1974, PETRONAS has grown to become a fully integrated, multinational oil and gas company with a presence in more than 30 countries. Its refining activities contribute 62% of the total refining capacity in Malaysia through the combined processing capacity of 323,000 barrels a day from its refineries at Kerteh and Melaka.
The Melaka refinery has two trains with a total capacity of 200,000 barrels a day: a hydroskimmer and a complex, full-conversion train that processes sour and sweet crude oil. Aware of the need to continually improve performance, the management of the Melaka refinery embarked on an opportunity identification study in 2003, followed by a business enhancement programme (BEP) for the refinery in 2004/2005.
