A better way to make hydrogen
Membrane technology boosts efficiency and helps cut emissions.
Hydrogen plays a key role in many chemical and industrial processes, and global demand for it is rising. The future role of hydrogen and the viability of the “hydrogen economy” will be shaped by issues such as how manufacturers purify hydrogen fuel and how they handle the carbon dioxide by-product.
Bulk hydrogen is generally produced by steam reforming of methane or natural gas. This process generates carbon dioxide that can be separated out for use as an industrial feedstock or for injection into depleted oil or gas reservoirs as part of a carbon sequestration strategy, but this reuse or storage of the carbon dioxide is not standard practice.
