A wide range of tools and techniques for real-time well and reservoir surveillance and optimisation is available to operators managing a digitally controlled oilfield.

However, in today’s climate, getting the most out of mature assets is also a high priority. Even if they have spare production capacity, responsible operators seek to optimise their existing wells and reservoirs to help increase long-term recovery factors and reduce overheads.

Maintaining production and improving the recovery factors from mature fields help to maximise the value of these assets; both processes can require timely well-by-well production information. With the right information delivered to the right people in easily usable formats, production declines or anomalies can be addressed and opportunities for improving production can be identified.

In new fields, operators can benefit from the same well-by-well production information for surveillance and optimisation, but they may also face challenges in realising the potential of the latest reservoir production and management approaches. Intelligent wells, subsea completions and modern platform architecture can all offer gains in operating efficiencies. However, without reliable production information, well, reservoir and real-estate optimisation is challenging.
