Technology provides the key
Tackling climate change requires the development and implementation of a raft of mainly technology-related measures
A report issued by McKinsey & Company earlier this year concludes that we have the potential to limit global warming to 2°C in the decades ahead. This is significant, because many scientists believe that by achieving this we can expect to avoid the worst effects of climate change. However, the report’s authors stress that reducing our emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by the required amount will take concerted action by people in every corner of the world. Moreover, action has to be taken immediately if we are to stand any chance of success.
Shell was one of 10 sponsoring organisations behind the McKinsey study that led to the report, Pathways to a Low-Carbon Economy. According to Wilfried Maas, CO₂ Theme Leader, Shell Global Solutions International BV, the report’s value lies in its objectivity and consistency. “McKinsey took a fiercely independent approach to the study. The result is an unequivocal dataset that forms a reliable basis for discussion about the best ways of tackling the problem of climate change,” he says.
