The world’s climate is changing and the world is using more energy than ever before. This is a trend that is not going to change.
The world’s climate is changing and, moreover, the world is using more energy than ever before. This trend is not going to change. Shell’s position on the energy challenge was made clear by Chief Executive Jeroen van der Veer, when he stated, “For us as a company, the debate about carbon dioxide is over. We have entered into a debate about what we can do about it.”
In fact, there is already a great deal that we can do to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. We launched an initiative several years ago to improve the efficiency of Shell’s refineries and chemical plants. On the basis of the initiative’s success, we extended these principles to other energy intensive facilities, not only within the oil and gas industry but also outside.
