Optimal disposal solution

Profound changes in global oil markets are setting refiners a host of major challenges. But these challenges also offer opportunities. As refiners cut ever deeper into the barrel to maximise their distillate yield, gasification technologies provide a powerful solution to the challenge of residue disposal that is both economically and environmentally viable.

New strategies required
Increasing the yield of lighter, high-value products that meet current and future specifications – while disposing responsibly and economically of residues – is of paramount importance for refineries.

Several processes exist to enable these objectives: e.g. separation technologies such as solvent de-asphalting (SDA); carbon rejection technologies such as visbreaking, (deep) thermal cracking, (flexi-) coking and fluid catalytic cracking; and hydrogen addition technologies such as catalytic hydrocracking.
