Standard, emulsion and oxidised grades
The basic grades sold by Shell Bitumen include penetration grades and oxidised bitumen.
Penetration Grades
The majority of penetration grade bitumens are used in road construction. The overall trend is towards adopting harder bitumens that produce asphalts which have superior properties to those manufactured using the softer grades.
Designation is by penetration range eg 40/60 pen bitumen has a penetration that ranges from 40 to 60 decimillimetres (dmm).

Shell Oxidised grade Bitumen
Shell's Oxidised bitumen range is used in the roofing and waterproofing industries, for carpet-backing, corrosion protection, acoustic panels and the manufacture of paints, amongst other applications.
The Shell Oxidised Bitumen product range includes:
- R 85/25
- R 85/40
- R 95/25
- R 95/40
- R 105/15
- R105/35
- R 115/15.
Applications
- roofing and waterproofing industries;
- carpet-backing;
- corrosion protection;
- acoustic panels; and
- manufacture of paints.
