Shell WAM Foam Process is an innovative technology formulated for manufacturing asphalt pavements at temperatures lower than those required for conventional 'hotmix' asphalt. This helps to reduce energy consumption and in turn yield significant environmental benefits at the asphalt mixing plant and during laying operations.

Good workability and high performance at low temperatures

The lower production and laying temperatures are achieved by combining soft and hard bitumen grades. The soft bitumen is mixed with the aggregate to precoat it and then the hard bitumen is introduced into the mixture as a foam. The Shell WAM Foam Process results in an asphalt mixture with good workability at lower temperatures and properties at least equivalent to those of 'hot mix' asphalt.

Traditionally, it has been necessary to heat asphalt mixtures for road paving to a minimum of 160°C, to ensure the mixture was fluid enough to be workable during mixing, laying and compacting (130 – 170°C). Using the Shell WAM Foam Process instead, the asphalt mixture only needs to be heated to 110 – 120°C, allowing compaction at temperatures below 110°C, up to 60°C lower than those required

Why reduce temperatures?

Reducing asphalt production and laying temperatures can yield significant environmental benefits at the asphalt mixing plant. Using the Shell WAM Foam Process could result in:

  • Up to ~35%* reduction in energy consumption when compared to traditional 'hot mix' production levels
  • Up to ~35%* reduction in CO2 emissions
  • Up to ~55%* reduction in fine dusts.

Shell WAM Foam Process has been designed to produce and lay asphalt pavements at lower temperatures than those required for conventional 'hot mix' asphalt.

This helps to reduce energy consumption and in turn yield significant benefits at the asphalt mixing plant and during laying operations. These include:

  • Reduction in CO2 emissions and fine dusts when compared to 'hot mix' asphalts
  • Savings in energy consumption when compared to traditional 'hot mix' production levels
  • Greater workability and so potentially a longer construction season and an extended workability window when compared to 'hot mix' asphalts
  • Performance and quality at least equivalent to that of 'hot mix' asphalts
  • Suitability for base and surface layers
  • Reduced exposure to heat and emissions for project workers and neighbours when compared to 'hot mix' asphalts.
