Shell S-Grade Binders
To minimise social and economic costs for road maintenance projects, asphalt-laying operations increasingly have to be carried out during restricted working hours e.g. on highways or airport projects.
Designed to accelerate productivity
More pavement surfacing jobs have to be carried out during night hours and under adverse weather conditions, bringing logistical difficulty and quality issues. This has driven Shell Bitumen to develop Shell S-Grade Binders, designed to help accelerate productivity.
The ready-to-use solution for improved workability
Shell S-Grade Binders’ special formulation provides a ready-to-use solution designed to improve the workability of hot mix asphalt. The properties of Shell S-Grade Binders lower the viscosity of the asphalt mixture at high temperatures whilst increasing its viscosity at low temperatures.
A lower viscosity at conventional temperatures for asphalt production and laying operations eases compaction and extends the workability window in comparison to conventional bitumen. This allows roads to be opened to traffic sooner and in turn generates less traffic disruption to the public. Additionally, S-Grade Binders’ increased viscosity at service temperatures delivers better rutting resistance and adhesion performance.
Extended laying window and improved logistics
Shell S-Grade asphalt mixtures can be successfully compacted at lower temperatures. Therefore, providing the asphalt mixture is manufactured at conventional temperatures, transportation time and distance can in most cases be extended significantly compared to conventional bitumen. The Shell S-Grade asphalt mixture also remains workable for a longer period of time, which can help increase the duration of the paving season and extend the range of operation of the asphalt mixing plant.
Reduced energy costs and consumption
Shell S-Grade Binders can also be used for lower temperature applications, helping to reduce energy costs for the asphalt mixing plant. The asphalt manufacturing temperatures can be reduced by 20–30°C, which means an approximate reduction in energy consumption of up to 9kWh per tonne of produced asphalt.* Using less energy during production can help the asphalt mixing plant reduce its emissions, including CO2.

You can use Shell S-Grade Binder technology across the full range of bitumen grades, including any road layer, as well as conventional paving grades and polymer modified binders. They can also be used in combination with Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP).
Shell S-Grade Binders can be used in the following applications:
- urban roads;
- roofing – laid by hand;
- mastic asphalt; and
- other areas of high traffic.
