Because bitumen surfaces are generally designed to serve communities for many years, we are conscious of the need for our solutions and ideas to meet the needs of all stakeholders involved, which is why we tailor our products for durability, safety and lower environmental impact.

We understand that it is essential for projects constructed with Shell Bitumen solutions to give long-lasting value to the communities in which they are built, which is why we have tried and tested technology like Shell Multiphalte formulated for increased resistance to rutting and fatigue. We’ve also developed Shell Cariphalte Fuel Safe designed to give pavements the strength to withstand the damaging effects of diesel and kerosene fuel.

Finally, safety remains paramount. The Shell Cariphalte binder, used in porous asphalt, is designed to help keep drivers safe in wet conditions. In addition, Shell Bitumen continues to work with industry bodies to promote safe delivery and handling, while ensuring its contractors comply with the highest safety standards.

Environment

The Shell WAM Foam Process offers compaction temperatures up to 60ºC lower than those required for conventional hot mix asphalt, so helping to contribute to significant reduction in emissions (C0₂, fine dusts) and energy consumption at the asphalt mixing plant and during laying operations.

Asphalt manufactured using Shell Floraphalte, our plant-based and high performance polymer binder, can be mixed and laid at temperatures up to 30ºC lower than those required for conventional hot mix asphalt, resulting in reduced energy consumption and in turn, decreased CO₂ emissions.

Shell Bitufresh has been developed to reduce bitumen odour, so providing improved working conditions for staff and less odour nuisance for residents working on/living near a project.
