Helping to power Ferrari from the start
Shell's unique relationship with Ferrari dates back to the 1930s, when the racing driver Enzo Ferrari founded a technical partnership with Shell whilst working alongside Alfa Romeo. In 1940 he formed a new company called Auto Avio Costruzioni maintaining his links with Shell. When motor racing came to a halt at the outbreak of WWII he moved his work shop from Modena to Maranello.
It was not until 1947 however, that Enzo Ferrari established the company known as Ferrari S.p.A. The first car bearing the name Ferrari was the 125 S, which won its first race in Rome shortly after being presented on May 11th. Ferrari branched out to Formula One™, participating in the very first race in 1950. By 1951 Ferrari had achieved its first ever Formula One™ win at Silverstone.
Enzo Ferrari made no secret of attributing much of his success to Shell, "Shell has always acknowledged the paramount importance of racing experience and this has enabled us to achieve remarkable results".

Fuelling the race for success
For 60 years Ferrari has been synonymous with high performance cars, both on the track and the road. When the first Ferrari exited the gates of Maranello in 1947 it was powered and protected by Shell.
Today, up to 40 Shell specialists contribute to the Formula One™ programme with Ferrari. The success of this relationship is proven through the 11 Drivers' and eight Constructors' FIA Formula One World Championship™ Titles.
In fact, in 2003 Ferrari broke the record for the number of consecutive Constructors' World Championships, a winning streak which began in 1999. Ferrari is constantly breaking records and holds more Championship titles than any other team on the track today.

The Mille Miglia literally means the Thousand Miles. The ultimate open-road test of endurance, this route led cars across the Italian countryside from Brescia to Rome and back again. One of the first race series to be dominated by Ferrari, the race took place from 1927 to 1957. Ferrari, supported by Shell, won the Mille Miglia consecutively and it was Piero Taruffi who won the final race in 1957 driving the Ferrari 315 S. 2007 saw the return of the race – for classic cars - marking its 80th anniversary.
