Developing Winning Lubricants
An exclusive interview with the Shell Lubricants Blending Plant Manager, Phil Freeman.
It would be easy to dismiss Formula One™ as a seasonal sport that simply takes to the circuits every couple of weeks for a few months a year; however we all know that isn’t the case. Months of preparation, development and most importantly, dedication, are required to get the cars on the track. Scuderia Ferrari and Shell work together throughout the year to develop race winning fuels and lubricants. Phil Freeman, Shell Lubricants Blending Plant Manager, is responsible for ensuring that Shell Helix and the other Shell lubricants are tailored to the Ferrari’s needs and delivered on time.
Based at the Shell Global Solutions facility in Chester, UK, Phil works closely with a small team to meet the challenging requirements of Formula One™. Shell is constantly developing new blends of engine lubricant that are tailored to the demands of the Ferrari strategy.
The Shell engineers have had to labour long into night, weeks on end, in order to test out new ideas and theories to obtain the optimum balance between power and protection. The learnings from these developments for the Formula One™ engine are then transferred to the Shell Helix range of motor oils that are available for your own car.
Like most Shell scientists that work on the Formula One™ programme, Phil and his colleagues all have a shared passion for ensuring that Shell makes the best possible contribution to Ferrari’s success.
