In the busy streets of the Dutch capital Amsterdam, Van Keulen, a local supplier of wood and construction materials, delivers to nearly 20,000 locations. In the city exhaust fumes from regular diesel-powered trucks containing fine particles contribute to local air pollution and the blackening of the city’s historic facades.

John Veerman, director of Van Keulen, wanted to help tackle this problem by cutting emissions from his 16 large trucks. He switched the fleet from regular diesel in 2012 to a cleaner-burning fuel made from natural gas, Shell GTL Fuel.

“Our drivers and passers-by are less exposed to harmful exhaust substances,” says John. “We believe this is because Shell GTL Fuel can emit fewer local emissions than regular diesel.”*

Van Keulen’s supply of Shell GTL Fuel comes from the world’s largest GTL plant that turns natural gas into a range of liquid products, Pearl in Qatar. One of these products is GTL gasoil, an alternative to diesel.

Most GTL gasoil from Pearl is blended into the conventional diesel supply chain as another option to diesel made from crude oil. A portion of this product is also shipped to the Pernis refinery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. From here it is supplied to customers in the Netherlands and Germany as Shell GTL Fuel.

Thanks to this supply to the Netherlands, a growing number of commercial Dutch companies are opting for Shell GTL Fuel. In Rotterdam, Roteb Lease has run some of its refuse trucks and street sweeping vans on Shell GTL Fuel since November 2012 – while Dutch-based Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe fills its construction machinery with Shell GTL Fuel before it’s sold in Europe.

There are practical benefits for other types of transport too. DB Schenker Rail Nederland N.V., the country’s largest rail transport operator, runs the three locomotives and three train-shunting robots on Shell GTL Fuel. It no longer has to clean and replace on-board soot filters, cutting fuel and maintenance costs compared to using regular diesel.
