Shell in the Arctic
Exploring a frozen world
Shell in the Arctic
It is estimated that the Arctic holds around 30% of the world’s undiscovered natural gas and 13% of its yet-to-find oil. This amounts to around 400 billion barrels of oil equivalent, 10 times the total oil and gas produced to date in the North Sea. Developing the Arctic could be essential to securing energy supplies for the future, but it will mean balancing economic, environmental and social challenges.
How we operate in the Arctic
Building on 50 years’ experience of operating in extreme Arctic and subarctic conditions.
Protecting biodiversity
Working with scientists to better understand the Arctic’s fragile ecosystem and limit the impact of our operations.
Arctic technology
Multi-layered well control systems, dedicated response vessels and reinforced platforms are some of the technologies we have developed to help meet the challenges of Arctic conditions.
Arctic science
Building on decades of Arctic research in considering how oil and gas activity can co-exist with a subsistence culture and local communities.
Softening the sound of drilling – with bubbles
Curtains of air bubbles could help dampen the sound of drilling in Arctic waters and avoid disturbing whales.
