Travel Stipends

The travel stipend set forth below will be given to each registered team traveling from either North or South America upon their arrival at the competition.

Shell uses MapQuest to calculate the distance from a registered school, measured from the central administration building or main campus address, to the event location address at Discovery Green in the George R. Brown Convention Center. If there are any uncertainties about distance measures, the final decision will be made by Shell.

Teams can easily customize the newsletter article by adding their team/vehicle information. Please consider sending the newsletter article, which provides an overview of the Shell Eco-marathon, to contacts at your school or department alumni newsletter, school newspaper, school or department website or blog, or any other small publications that might be interested in announcing your team's registration.

Food and Lodging

Food

Three meals per day are provided to eight team members. There will be an additional cost of $100 per person (covering food and beverage for the duration of the event) will apply for any team members exceeding eight. Teams are encouraged to bring their own snacks.

Lodging

Secure campgrounds are offered in the George R. Brown Convention Center (free of charge.) Hotel rooms are available at discounted group rates. Please note that the group rates are only available for a limited time. See the 'Getting Here' section for more information.

Garage (Paddock) Space

Each team will have a 30' x 10' working space in Hall C of the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Shipping

We require all international teams to ship their vehicles through Freeman, the shipping provider of the George R. Brown Convention Center. Teams within with United States are strongly encouraged to ship via Freeman.

Freeman offers competitive prices and will ensure that your vehicle arrives on time and is sent directly to your paddock space. They will also assist you with the proper customs and EPA paperwork and will help if your vehicle gets stuck in customs. International teams that have shipped via other shipping providers in the past have experienced many road blocks, government issues and have had their vehicles stuck in customs. We are unable to assist teams with these issues when they do not ship through Freeman.

All shipments will go directly to the GRB Convention Center. Inbound orders within the United States must be shipped NO LATER than five business days before the event. International shipments will vary greatly. Air shipments should be shipped 15 days prior to the event for transportaion and Customs clearance. You should allow 65 days for Ocean shipments, transit and Customs clearance.

Shipments that arrive before April 4 will be refused by the convention center. If you need to have your vehicle(s) arrive before April 4, you can ship it to the warehouse, but additional fees will apply.  Please contact your relationship manager for details and for the warehouse address/paperwork.

While making your shipping plans to the event, also plan for the shipment following the event. Ensure that someone knowledgeable from your team will be onsite to oversee the return shipment of your vehicle and equipment.

Building a Crate

Parking

There will be places to park trailers at the event. The closest parking areas are 'first-come, first-serve' and is recommended for trailers and vehicles that contain items you'll need on site, e.g. tools. There will be additional parking available a little farther away from the immediate track site.

Submitting Technical Drawings

Your technical drawings are a critical component of your Shell Eco-marathon Americas entry. Here are some helpful sample diagrams for the battery electric, solar, hydrogen and internal combustion engine categories that address what you should plan to include for your submissions in your respective category.

Phase II Tips

Please upload photos and technical drawings of your engine, fuel supply and electrical circuitry designs as soon as possible. This, in combination with the written text that you provide, will help us ensure these critical vehicle components meet the requirements outlined in the rules and regulations. Upload documents in PDF format only, with a maximum file size of 1MB.
