Safety and awareness
Safety and security are key to be successful in Shell Eco-marathon. We put our effort into guaranteeing that all facilities are safe. See how teams can help to provide safety to the participants.
- Nominate a team member as your Chief Safety Officer. S/he should be given full authority to enforce safety rules and ensure they are fully respected.
- Ensure your working area is kept as clean and tidy as possible: good housekeeping is a must and the first step in ensuring everyone’s safety. It also has the added bonus of facilitating your day-to-day work!
- Always wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment for the task in hand. Protective overalls, gloves, glasses, welding mask, ear protectors, dust masks and anything else you will need should all be part of your construction armoury. Make an inventory of the type and number of protective items your team will need and ensure that you have these supplies before you even start working on your project.
- Use tools, such as drills, grinders and welding sets, etc. with extreme care. Ensure that you have read the operating instructions for any tools completely and respect these instructions to the full. Should any of these break down, return them to the manufacturer/authorised dealer – do not try to repair them yourself.
- Exercise extreme caution when handling flammable products such as fuels and solvents. No naked flame should be allowed within the vicinity. Welding should not take place.
- Remember that no smoking is not allowed anywhere in the workshop.
- Ensure you have at least one fire extinguisher to hand in your workshop. We recommend a 6kg dry-chemical extinguisher suitable for “ABC” class of fires (for example, European norm EN-3), of which the maintenance date later than 31/05/2009. You will need to bring an extinguished of this class to the event as a compulsory part of your paddock equipment.
