After months of preparation and four exciting days of competition, the 30th anniversary of Shell Eco-marathon Europe has drawn to a close. There were three new track records set this year, two of which were the strongest performances in the competition’s history.

Thirty years of technological innovation, outstanding achievements and once-in-a-lifetime experiences mark a significant milestone in what is one of the most challenging engineering student competitions, Shell Eco-marathon Europe. Over 200 student teams from 30 countries throughout Europe and beyond are invited to Rotterdam from 21-24 May to push the boundaries of energy efficiency on the road.

Five records set and future energy challenges tackled at Shell Eco-marathon Europe 2013
After three challenging days of competition on the streets of Rotterdam, Shell Eco-marathon Europe 2013 has drawn to a close with winners from nine countries scooping the prizes. 183 student teams from 24 countries competed under difficult circumstances with cars they designed and built themselves on the challenging street circuit and amazed everyone by setting five new records. Results are measured on who can drive the furthest on the equivalent of 1 kWh or 1 litre of fuel.

Innovative thinking for record breaking fuel efficiency returns to the streets of Rotterdam
Driving from Rotterdam to Moscow on one litre of fuel may seem like an impossible task, but it isn’t. Every year, students from across Europe push the boundaries of fuel efficiency during the Shell Eco-marathon Europe, competing using vehicles they design and build themselves. Record breaking fuel efficiency is set with conventional fuels such as petrol, diesel, ethanol and GTL fuel, as well as alternative fuels like hydrogen and electricity. In 2012 the Dutch city of Rotterdam was temporarily transformed into a street circuit, with over 40,000 spectators in attendance.
