Rotterdam – a sustainable city

Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands and one of the largest ports in the world. Strategically located at the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta on the North Sea and at the heart of a huge rail, road, air and inland waterway distribution system, it is often called the Gateway to Europe.

The Rotterdam Municipal Executive wants “a clean, green and healthy city where sustainability contributes to a strong economy”, supported by the new Rotterdam Sustainability Programme. Plans include cutting carbon emission by half, improving air quality, and reducing noise.

The city’s focus on sustainability makes it a suitable location for Shell Eco-marathon, which sparks debate about greater energy efficiency into the future.

Going public

Visitor and student numbers reached around 40,000 in the 2012 edition, the first time the event has been open to the public. The competition remains loyal to its student-focused roots, while helping the public to engage with today’s energy challenge.
