Rotterdam: a sustainable city

Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands and one of the largest ports in the world. In the heart of a huge rail, road, air and inland waterway distribution system, the city is often called the Gateway to Europe.

The Rotterdam Municipal Executive wants “a clean, green and healthy city where sustainability contributes to a strong economy”, supported by the new Rotterdam Sustainability Programme. Plans include cutting carbon emission by half, improving air quality, and reducing noise. The city’s focus on sustainability makes it a suitable location for Shell Eco-marathon, which sparks debate about greater energy efficiency into the future.
