Rotterdam launch
This January Shell Eco-marathon Europe entered a new phase in its long history when it unveiled its brand new street circuit at a launch event in Rotterdam's sustainable Floating Pavilion. Alderman of Rotterdam Alexandra van Huffelen, President Director Shell Netherlands Dick Benschop and Race Director Jeroen Frieman provided insights and a briefing on the new circuit to the 17 Dutch teams participating in this year’s challenge.
The students exchanged thoughts on the challenges of the new circuit, which in addition to being held on city streets for the first time, now includes five 90° turns and requires UrbanConcept vehicles to make one full stop per lap.
The 217 competing teams from 28 countries will need to rely now more than ever on their driving skills with braking, accelerating and cornering accounting for up to 50% of the results.
The new circuit is sure to showcase some exciting student innovations and futuristic vehicles on a more realistic stage when the teams take their place on the starting line.
