The grand opening
Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2012 opened this morning with a grand opening ceremony attended by Shell’s CFO Simon Henry and Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Idris Jala, chief executive officer of Malaysia’s Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU), as well as ambassadors, stakeholders and business leaders from Malaysia and around the region, who all gathered to see the innovative vehicles the teams brought to the track.
A student brass band, accompanied by flag dancers, kicked off the event with a local flavor while we waited for the guests of honour to arrive. After that, representatives from each participating country walked the track as part of a colourful and atmospheric ceremony that really stands out from the sister events as unique to this region!
Mr Henry welcomed everyone to the event and reminded students that they are part of 3 global events and said: “You should be proud to be part of a group of young, global innovators!”
Following the flag-off ceremony, Mr. Henry also opened the Future Energy Smarter Mobility Forum which will see 150 policymakers and stakeholders from around the region take part in a panel discussion on smarter mobility, sustainable transportation and city planning in countries across Asia.
