Students from Rice University prepare their car for the race at Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2012 on Friday, March 30 in downtown Houston.

The Rice University Solar Car Team, the newest addition to the Houston-area schools attending Shell Eco-marathon Americas, has been on a long journey leading up to the competition. After being recruited to participate in the event, the team began building their solar-powered vehicle, RSC1, last spring.

Three months before the competition the students hit a bump in the road and had to do a complete rebuild of the car with one important element missing – the solar panels.

A mere two weeks ago, the solar panels arrived and the team was able to complete their vehicle, leaving little time for testing. At the start of the practice day, the team was anxious to see how well their vehicle would do on the track.

The team from Rice University operates as a club and funding for the vehicle was collected from various fundraisers and donors, with fifty percent of the funds coming from a single donor.
