Brazil Students Visit Shell Eco-marathon Americas for the First Time

With teams from Canada to Brazil, this year’s event is truly a competition for the Americas

It’s the first Shell Eco-marathon Americas experience for each student in the four teams from Brazil.

The UNIOESTE team began competing nationally in 2009. Last December, they decided to compete in this year's Houston competition with a new vehicle. After only a couple of months of seeking grants and donations, the team shipped its car in February for a cost of $27,000.

They, then, traveled 24 hours, had to navigate customs, and are now ready to explore the City of Houston and record high mileage on the track. They also have another 'to do' list; from the Houston Zoo to Space Center Houston, they are determined to pack in all the sights they can in between working on their car and the event.

Competing in this event has been their dream since 2009. A new competition, a new city and a new culture make for high spirits as the team buys and adds a few parts, in Houston, which were unavailable in Brazil. They also plan to come back next year, but with more cars and in a more cost-effective way.
