Students from Louisiana Tech University prepare their car for the race at Shell Eco-marathon Americas 2013 on Thursday, April 4, 2013 in downtown Houston.

For the fourth year in a row, Shell Eco-marathon Americas will take place in Houston.

The event continues to stay close to the public by holding the fuel-efficiency challenge in an urban street circuit – the city roads around Discovery Park Green.

In 2012, more than 1,000 high school and university students with 112 vehicles competed in the annual challenge to see who could go the farthest distance using the least amount of energy.

Close to a thousand students are expected to attend with up to 110 teams taking part in the competition.

Set in the city, the competition is easily accessible to the public – for the past three years the event has welcomed over three million visitors.

But they don’t just come to see the eco-friendly cars. The event included a range of interactive displays and activities which encourage people to focus on future energy challenges.
